NIE Number

What is an NIE number and how do I get one?
If you’re moving to Spain, or even just thinking about it, the NIE is one of the very first things you’ll come across. And for good reason. It’s probably the most essential document you’ll need in Spain.
NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero, and it’s your personal identification number as a foreigner in Spain. Without one, you’ll very quickly find yourself unable to move forward with even the most basic things.
It’s worth being clear from the start: an NIE is not a residency card and it doesn’t give you the right to live in Spain long-term. It’s simply the identification number that allows you to exist legally within the Spanish system, whether you’re planning to settle here permanently, or just need it for a one-off process.
What do you need an NIE for?
You’ll need one for a wide range of things, including:
- Buying or renting property or a vehicle
- Setting up utilities like electricity and water
- Opening a Spanish bank account
- Starting a job or registering as self-employed
- Getting a Spanish driving licence
- Signing up for healthcare
- Receiving an inheritance
- Registering your pet’s microchip
- Sorting taxes and financial paperwork
What does an NIE look like?
When issued on its own (not linked to residency), your NIE comes on a simple white A4 page, printed with your name, a few official stamps, and your NIE number. It’s basic, but it’s what you need and it’s completely valid.
Where and how do you get an NIE number?
You have two options:
Option 1: Apply in Spain
You’ll need to book a cita previa (appointment) at a Comisaría (police station) that handles foreigner paperwork. At the appointment, you’ll present your documents, provide a valid reason for needing the NIE, and pay a small fee of just under €10. Click here to see exactly what you’ll need to bring.
Bear in mind that appointment availability varies a lot by region — some fill up very quickly, so it’s worth acting as soon as you know you need one.
Option 2: Apply via a Spanish Consulate abroad
This is a great option if you want to have your NIE in hand before arriving in Spain. Contact your nearest Spanish consulate, book an appointment, submit the required documents, and your NIE will be issued after a short processing time.
