Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining Your NIE Number in Spain

If you’re planning to stay in Spain for more than three months, you’ll need to obtain a Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE), or Foreigner Identification Number. This number is essential not only to legally reside in Spain but also for numerous everyday transactions, such as opening a bank account, purchasing property, or setting up utilities. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

Step 1: Prepare the Required Documents

To apply for your NIE, you’ll need to gather and complete the following:

  1. Form EX-15: Download and complete the application form. Instructions are available in English or French if needed.
  2. Fee payment form: Obtain the form for paying the administrative fee. Tick the box that says: “Asignación de Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) a instancia del interesado”.
  3. Written declaration: A document explaining your reasons for applying for the NIE (e.g., employment, purchasing property, or starting a business).
  4. Passport or ID card: Bring your original passport or national ID card and a photocopy of the entire document.
  5. Photocopies of all forms: It’s a good idea to bring duplicates of all forms and documents.

You can download these forms online or collect them in person from your local Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería).

Step 2: Pay the NIE Application Fee

Fill in the form to pay the tasa online, print and take to your local bank to pay. They will then stamp the form to show it’s been paid.

  1. Take this form to any bank in Spain.

  2. Pay the required fee. Note that some banks only accept these payments during specific times or on particular days, so check beforehand.

Step 3: Book an Appointment

After paying the fee, you’ll need to schedule a second appointment at the same Immigration Office or Police Station. At this appointment, you will:

  • Submit the completed Form EX-15.
  • Provide the stamped fee payment form as proof of payment.
  • Hand over the required documents, including your written declaration and photocopies.

Step 4: Collect Your NIE Certificate

In many cases, you’ll receive your NIE certificate there and then. If you don’t receive your NIE certificate immediately after submitting your documents you’ll need to book another appointment to collect it in the time the funcionario gives you to come back in.

  • The NIE certificate is an A4 paper document that includes your assigned NIE number.
  • Keep in mind that this is not an identification card nor does it grant you the legal right to reside in Spain.

Additional Information

  • If you are abroad but need a NIE, you can apply through the Spanish consulate in your home country or assign a power of attorney to a trusted third party in Spain.
  • If you are applying for a residence permit or EU citizen registration certificate, the NIE may be assigned automatically during that process.

Final Tips

  • Double-check all documentation requirements before your appointment to avoid delays.
  • Be patient. The process can take time due to the high demand for NIE applications.
  • If you need assistance with the procedure, consult a professional advisor or legal representative.

With preparation and the steps outlined above, obtaining your NIE can be a smooth process.
