What is an NIE number and how do I get one?
If you’re planning to live in Spain as an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen, whether it’s for work, retirement, or a change of scenery, this is one of the first official things you’ll need to deal with: EU residency registration.
It’s not a visa, because you don’t need one. But it is a legal requirement if you’re planning to stay longer than 90 days.
The official name is the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea – your EU Residency Certificate. It’s the document that proves your right to live in Spain as an EU citizen.
What is the EU Residency Certificate?
This certificate is legal proof that you’ve registered your residence in Spain as an EU citizen. It includes your full name, nationality, address in Spain, and your NIE number – your personal foreign ID number in the Spanish system.
It’s issued on a green credit card-sized piece of paper, and while it’s not flashy, it’s essential. It confirms your legal residence status and allows you to fully participate in life here.
What do you need EU residency for?
If you plan on staying for more than 90 days, legally you should have it.
Just to be clear…
This isn’t a visa. And it isn’t optional, despite what a fellow EU citizen whose been here for 20 years with “no problems” tells you in a Facebook group!
Even though you have the right to live in Spain as an EU citizen, the Spanish authorities require you to register officially within the first 90 days of arrival.
✅ It doesn’t expire, but if you’ve been in Spain for over 5 years, you can request a permanente version that confirms your long-term resident status.
How I Can Help You (Because I’ve been you)
When I first moved to Spain at 22, I was totally lost. I didn’t speak fluent Spanish, had no idea where to start, and couldn’t afford to pay a lawyer or gestor to sort it for me.
It was stressful, confusing, and often felt like a never-ending game of paperwork ping-pong. Blogs and Facebook barely existed at this point!
That’s why I created Your Virtual Assistant in Spain – to give people like you the support I wish I’d had back then. Real help, from someone who’s done it and now knows the system inside out.
