Spain's Digital Nomad Visa

A quick guide on how to apply for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa

Your Path to Remote Work Life in Spain

Picture this: You’re starting your mornings with ocean views, working from a sunny terrace with a café con leche in hand. Your afternoons end with strolls through cobbled streets, spontaneous tapas with friends, and warm summer nights under Spanish skies.

But as dreamy as it sounds, the reality of relocating can feel like a maze. Visa applications, confusing paperwork, language barriers, and endless bureaucracy. If that’s what’s been holding you back, take a deep breath – you’ve found the help you need. Let’s navigate it together.

What Is the Digital Nomad Visa?

Launched in 2023, this visa is Spain’s way of welcoming non-EU/EEA remote workers to legally live and work here. Commonly nicknamed the “Digital Nomad visa” it’s actually a teleworkers visa. It’s designed for:

  • Remote employees working for companies outside Spain.

  • Freelancers or contractors with non-Spanish clients (you can make up to 20% of your remote income from a Spanish company/client).

You can apply from within Spain or from your home country. If approved from inside Spain, you’ll receive up to a 3-year residence permit (which can potentially be renewed for another 2). Spouses and dependents can join you, and your partner can even get full work rights here.

Do You Qualify?

Before we go too far, let’s see if you meet the basics:

Income Requirements (2025)

  • Solo applicant: €2,763/month

  • Add €1,036/month for a spouse

  • Add €345/month for each additional dependent

Work Requirements

  • You’ve worked with your employer or clients for at least 3 months.

  • Your employer/clients have been operating for over a year.

  • They’re happy to confirm in writing that you can work from Spain.

  • You’ve got either a relevant bachelors degree or 3 years of experience.

  • Your clients/employer is a registered business, not individuals.

Legal Requirements

  • You can provide a clean criminal record for anywhere you have legally resided in the past 2 years.

  • You’re willing to sign a declaration of no serious criminal history over the last 5 years.

If you’re ticking all those boxes – great! You’re likely eligible.

Applying: Spain or Abroad?

You can apply in two ways:

  1. In Spain: Receive up to 3 years of residency

  2. Via a Consulate: Only a 1-year visa, followed by further steps in Spain

Whenever possible, I recommend applying from within Spain – it’s faster and gives you a longer stay from the start.

You can apply yourself (once you have a NIE and Digital Certificate) or work with someone like me who knows the ins and outs of every step. No guesswork. No missed details.

How It Works

01 Check you qualify

02 Decide whether you're doing this alone or need some help

Can you apply for the visa by yourself? Yes! But not everyone has the time to be in all of the Facebook groups and constantly checking the latest updates. In that case, hiring someone becomes worth the money!

03 Start gathering documents 2 - 4 months prior

Some countries are quicker than others when it comes to requesting a document and getting it Apostilled. 2-4 months prior is a good amount of time to reduce stress!

04 submit the application once in spain

You need to be physically in Spain to do the Spain-based application. You will need an NIE number and a digital certificate if you're doing this yourself.
